What I Would Give for Christmas

I just gave this assignment to my 5th graders. Dear Santa, This is what I'd like to give for Christmas. One student said, "I'd like to give my sister away." Another said, "I'd like to give my sister a kick in the (backside)." From the sounds of the class this assignment is going to backfire I think.
Oh well, I tired.
What I would like to give for Christmas? These are not in any particular order, however the first on the list is going to be somewhat selfish. I would like to give Jen a 2-3 week vacation in Hawaii hoping that she would take me with her. I would like to reserve as many rooms as necessary and take family and friends to Disneyland. In addition give every family $1,000 for any expenses. The cool thing is I would charter a flight to carry everyone there. I would also pay for those who happen to be living out of the country to fly to SLC and then fly to John Wayne Airport with us.
I would like to give the faculty and staff at Greenwood Elementary a catered steak fry. Then purchase a smart board for all the teachers that desired one. Then I would give each teacher a $2,000 Visa gift card to spend on any school supplies they need. I would also give each person a bonus check just for the fun it. That would range from $1,000 to $2,000.
I would give Snow College's music department some money for scholarships.
I would like to go to a truck stop and buy dinners for the truck drivers. I would also sit at a gas station and buy tanks of gas for an hour or so. I would love to walk down the street and give away $100 bills to anyone I meet. I would rent a theater for my students to watch a movie plus buy themtreats.
Okay I think I am done giving for a few minutes.
Thanks,

OLD Man

We have added another member to our family!!!

This weekend another living being was added to our family. Yes, we got a dog. He is two years old and is a pure blood Beagle. Ashley, Nathan, Maggey, Abbey and I picked him up on Saturday. We found him on KSL.com classifieds. The family we got him from is moving to Mississippi at the end of this week.
Jen had very little warning that a dog was coming to the family. She has told me that if we cleaned our the dog pen and had so the gate locked that we could get one. We met both of those requirements. Before she left for California last week I told her that I was going to one of those things where it was easier to ask for repentance than for permission. I told her that I was going to get a dog this weekend. So, she did have some forewarning.
Saturday night and part of Sunday we debated how we we ought to spring this new addition on Lindsey. We really wanted it to be good.
Nathan had come up with the basic plan to come up behind her when she got to the front door with her luggage.
Here's what happened. Jen and I picked up Linds from the high school. As we pulled out of the parking lot I called home and asked the kids to unlock the front door, and we were on our way home. This was the sign to get coats on and Buxton (the dog) down the street. The other clue we had is that I would turn on the blinker in my truck in front of Pineda's house.
Lindsey was pretty quick to get to the house so I told her to come and help me get her suitcase out of the truck.
I've got to go I'll finish this story later.
By the time Lindsey got to the door the rest of the crew came up behind her. Ashley said, "Hi, Lindsey." Nathan was behind her with the dog on the leash. Lindsey sat down on the porch and let Buxton lick her face. She told us yesterday that she had a hard time focusing in class. She could take notes, but wanted to be home with her dog.
During dinner we debated about changing Buxton's name. With parental influence the name voted on was Henry. Then Jen suggested Henry Jones. Today I said it could be Sir Henry Jones. Nathan and Lindsey aren't all that hip about Henry, so I guess we have a hung jury. I think a name will come out in next few days.
FYI, Buxton was the name that the breeder gave him.
Now, Jen had told me that she wasn't coming home until Monday night. Sunday morning I got a text saying that she was on your way home. That was a big wrench in our plan. I really thought I had another day to figure out how to tell her.
Fortunately or unfortunately she was home an hour before Lindsey got home. We were going to try and do the same for her, but Ashley didn't get the message to do the same thing as with Lindsey.
I will admit that Jen took it a bit better than expected, but she knew something was up. When I called to see where she was Ashley started singing, "Who let the Dogs out?" and Jen heard it.
That's all for now. We will add pictures on the family blog.

An Observation of this OLD Man

I wish that I had gotten to this topic before now. There were some thoughts I had regarding the band competitions that I attended last weekend. Now that I have sat down to write about it I can't remember. Maybe if I start they will come back to me.
I do remember feeling somewhat relieved that marching band was over. Obviously it has been a very emotional season. BOA (Bands of America) dedicated Saturday night's finals to Heather. Boy let the tears start rolling. The kids did really well. The kids did themselves proud. We were a little nervous that they might be out done by some of the other bands that were attending the competition. They were able to finish the season on a high note (how do you like that pun?).
I am amazed at the response that the band has received because of this season and its events. The amount of love that has been expressed has been incomprehensible. This brought to mind a thought that I once read. I hope that I can express this thought in a manner that is appropriate. The thought goes something like this: Before we came to this earth some of us chose to return home (die) early in our lives because our work would be more effective if done from the other side of the veil.
Realize these are the thoughts that I had Saturday night.
Lindsey was called to a leadership meeting Monday morning. She didn't have a clue for the meeting. Well, she called after the meeting and told us the band was going to try and go to Grand Nationals this year. This was Monday morning...Grand Nationals is on Friday. They had to raise over $250,000 by Tuesday noon to go. Not only did they earn it, they surpassed all expectations. Anyway, the band leaves tomorrow morning. When I heard all of this on Monday morning I was worn out and wanted to go back to bed.
This has been a season of miracles.
District policy states that we need to have a parent meeting to vote yes or no for any over night trip. Monday night during the parent meeting one parent said, "Let's get these kids to Grand Nationals and if they win we're a movie." Season of Miracles could be the name of the movie. (Mr. Miller said that Tom Cruise has to play his part). I will say that the kids are not going to Grand Nationals to win. The students feel this is a way for them to say "thank you" to all of the bands/people that have expressed all that has been expressed to them over the last 4 weeks.
If you taken the time to read this, thank you so much for listening to the ramblings of an OLD Man. It means a great deal.

Bats

I am not a bat liking kind of guy. They kind of creep me out. Batman movies would be the exception. However, on Saturday night I was fascinated to watch them eat. Let me explain. We were in St. George for marching band competitions. Moths and flying things are attracted to lights and the stadium lights attracted a lot of them. When the bats came out to eat I sat and watched them in between shows. It was fun to watch the bats dive to get a moth or whatever was flying. Sometimes the bats would miss their prey. Other bats would sweep in and steal the dinner from another bat. Some bats would just drop out of the sky to catch their dinner and then soar up to look for more.
It was interesting to watch and at times entertaining.

The First of November is when?

I cannot believe how fast the month of October flew by. With the events of Sep and October I am glad that it moved quickly.
Today was our Halloween Parade at school. Unfortunately, I didn't have the patience to come up with a costume. I did wear a BYU shirt and hat. But I claimed to be me this Halloween. For better or worse it was unique, no one can be me. However, I did wear my name tag the reads UNKNOWN where my name should be written (thanks to Cory Adams Photography).
This year's class was probably the most creative I have had in my 13 years of Holloweens at school. I believe that only one of my students didn't dress up...maybe 2 or 3. Thanks to Kris Pontious we had a great party. Thanks to all you room mothers out there! You are greatly appreciated.
We spent part of the evening with the Vigues across the street. Syndey asked what my happy and sad was today. I told her that my happy was that I bought 2 tires for the van, got the oil changed, and bought some windsheild wipers. My sad was that I had to pay for all of those things. I was thankful. The salesman at Big O charged me the same price for today's purchase as for the tires they put on the car in February. I was able to get all of it done in about 45 minutes, and I certainly loved that. Now I can sleep in tomorrow before heading to USU.
I am going to read some more.

The Firsts in Life

Life is full of firsts. For example, taking that first step, the first time you laugh, the first time you ride your bike without training wheels, the inevitable first crash on your bike; first love, first kiss.
Well, I experienced another first yesterday. Last week a new student was assigned to my class. This student came from Singapore by way of Hawaii. She had never seen snow. Singapore has summer weather year round. I learned this from this student's dad. It started snowing yesterday just before lunch. I lined the students up and we marched outside in the snow, wind and cold. We stayed out for about 15 seconds or so, okay maybe a little longer. She stood outside and and got snow in her hair.
When I said something about it later in the day she just smiled. It was the first time that I got to introduce a student to her first experience with snow.
Pausing a moment to think of other firsts. The first of two home runs (both grand salamis by the way).
The first time we drove to Snow College to start the college thing. I remember driving by Mona and Freeway moaning "Mona". I think it was from some advertisement at the time.
Ah, Snow College. I have very fond memories of that place and time. Dave Owens telling that I am trying out for Ascension, Snow's show choir. The only time that I ever sung in group before that was when I was in 8th or 9th grade in a barbershop group. Being on my own. It scares me to death now that I'm an adult and looking back. How did I ever do it? What were my parents thinking? Letting some punk kid go out on his own at the ripe old age of 17.
Will I let my crew do such a thing? Maybe I'll become president of the US and then my kids will need a detail to follow them around. That's what I'll do. This way it won't be me following them around and they can't blame me for keeping tabs on them. Who is going to vote for me?
I'll let you tour Air Force One. For your information: Air Force One is any plane the presidents happens to be on. So, if I'm the PRES. and I'm sitting on a Cessna 152 that becomes Air Force One. A Cessna 152 is a little 2 seat trainer. Be careful with the promises I make. If I'm the president can I make the air force take me up in an F-16? or an Apache?
Hey, if I'm president I will be the first one from Utah. How's that for a first?

I'm Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired

I have spent the last 3 days in bed. Between a fever, body aches, and a cough. I am ready for a vacation. Unfortunately these last 3 days have been my vacation. I have decided to go to school tomorrow I'm tired of my vacation, and Jen is telling me that I am staying home. If I am going to be feeling gunky I might as well do it at school where, I can be productive. I'm certainly not being productive here.
I need to go take care of dinner.

FYI

Hey All,
I can only get to my homepage on Facebook. I can't comment on anything or look at messages in my box. None of my links work.
Lindsey is doing well. She still feels a little sore. She did stay home from school yesterday and slept to 1:45. Oh, how she needed it. Her countenance is better as well.
Last night while Lindsey was at the ball game and Nathan, Jen and Ashley were at YM/YW, I had the special privilege of taking 2 beautiful girls to the movie. I got to sit in the middle while the two of them past a 7UP and popcorn over me. I got to have each girl lay her head on each shoulder. All you guys out there, "Eat your HEART out!!!"
I'm not sure if the Sticky Shoe is all that wonderful, but we had a great time. It really depends on the company regardless of where you are. Maggey, Abbey, and I went to see Ice Age 3. It has been a while since I have taken them on a date. I really liked it. They are a good crew.
There's not much more news on the homefront. Jen is working hard as always, doesn't matter which job she's doing. This sounds mean, but I wish I could kick her off the planet so she can rest from her current load of cares. Oh, how that woman needs a hotel, hot shower or a jetted hot tub, and 24 hours to sleep. After that she could use a good hot meal. Then probably another 12 hours to sleep. That just might be enough to recharge her batteries.
I do wich I could give it to her.
It is way past my bedtime. So, to all of you, good night.

An Observation of an OLD Man

Though the hour is quite late I will still say that tonight was a beautiful night. AF Marching Band attended BYU's Rocky Mountain Tournament. I don't know the official title and currently am not concerned.
I went early enough to see many of the bands play. I was impressed with Bingham, Lone Peak, and others. However, my concentration was not necessarily who performed best, but that the kids of American Fork could do a show of which they could be proud. Also, being a proud and unbiased father (hahahaha) I was concerned with the one member of the band that lives in my house. I've learned how she marches and have learned to pick her out pretty well.
They did themselves proud and honorably paid tribute to a fallen comrad. I was impressed by the many red and black ribbons and/or black arm bands that were worn by many bands and spectators alike. Oh, how would love to get on a loud speaker and personally give thanks for the support we have received as a community and as a family.
During BYU's performance tonight someone had let go a flock of doves. This flock flew in beautiful formation over the stadium. I wonder if many people noticed them.
Mostly likely what Iam about to say may sound anti-climatic, and/or weird, but forgive me and take it in the spirit in which it is intended.
After it became dark it rained for the most part the rest of the evening. I could look up and see it falling through the light; and though I could see it I couldn't feel it. I want to say it was an odd sensation, but that would not do it justice or doesn't quite fit. My pants, jacket, and hat were wet, but I just didn't feel the rain. I would even hold my hands out in front of me and still couldn't feel the rain. When we arrived home this evening I could feel it then.
Abbey said, "Dad, when you look into the rain it looks like on Star Wars when the ships go really fast." I don't remember feeling the rain then either.
The band had placed Heather's picture on one of their props with the caption that quoted the scripture that reads, "Greater love hath no man this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." In a conversation with a childhood friend of mine I made the comment that if I could die and have that said of me, I'd die a happy man.
For those band members that are still struggling with the events of the last few days. May our Heavenly Father bless you with that which you need. And for all of you that you may use what you have gained by this experience and make you part of the world a better place.
Have a rockin' awesome day!!!!

The Next Day

Today was still emotional for me at school. I was glad to get home. I really loved seeing my kids when I got home.
My spirits are much better now that I have been able to be home and just be with the fam.
Lindsey is still sore and has found a couple more bruises. She is also happy that she has her backpack back. A couple of dads went up to get the students' stuff. They had to get it from the bus. Lindsey's flute is also intact. That is another sweet sorrow. She is in need of a new flute. I know, I know...a very difficult way to get a new flute.
We are so thankful for the all the family and friends that offered prayers in our and Lindsey's behalf. We are still hearing about many of the Lord's tender mercies.
Much love and thanks from this OLD Man.

A Day of Sweet Sorrow

The following is something that I wrote concerning the last 24 hours. Please excuse the mistakes you find. I don't have the heart to edit/revise this post.
As many of you now know that Lindsey was on the bus that crashed last evening. She is doing okay even through the many of her own tears as well as the rest of the family.
Miss Emmy sent Jen a text last night saying that a bus had flipped. I was in that space between sleep and awake when Jen came into our bedroom and told. This information took several minutes to actually sink in.
When it finally did Jen was in Maggey and Abbey's room. At this point she was talking to Emily (Miss Emmy). This was when Jen had learned that it was the bus that Lindsey was riding. It was about this time that phone calls to and fro started. We kept busy between our land line and our cell phones.
I cannot say how long it was from the time that we learned that Lindsey was on the bus that crashed and we were able to talk with her. Suffice it to say to hear her voice was wonderful joy to experience.
Through the night we received many phone calls asking about Lindsey and is there anything that could be done. At the time, prayer was the only answer. Over a period of 2 hours we debated whether we needed to drive to Pocatello. Thanks to Jeff, who knew the nurse that was with the band, we were able to make an informed decision and decided to remain home.
Around midnight Jen decided to go to the high school. When she arrived the parking lot was full and many people mulling about. Someone had provided hot chocolate. When arrived later I met Jen in the doorway leading into the bandroom. A group of students were in the bandroom singing.
After 1 AM 3 buses arrived. Each bus load of students were escorted into the band. It was there that the students were given the opportunity to sing Friends and then students were able to come out and be hugged and kissed. After crowds started to disipate I became anxious about the arrival of my own child.
Lindsey's bus came home about 3:15. She was near the front the bus and I saw her immediately. When I saw her I just wanted to jump on the bus and hold her. She had to take care of a couple of responsibilities and then she was hugged me and we cried. Jen hugged her from behind.
After a few hours sleep we got up and went to church. As this day progressed the realization of what could have happened, but didn't.
As Jen put it we knew our daughter was coming home. However, one set of parents would not be getting the same privilege. Many tears have been shed for the daughter that would not be coming home. Her passing has affected many people whether they knew her or not. The key is what we choose to do with this affect.
God Bless All!!!

Ramblings of Really OLD Man!!!!

I want to ramble, but I really have nothing to ramble about. However, I have spent the last 2 nights at my favorite hotel. I get a hot shower, meals in bed, waited on hand and foot. Are you jealous? I have not received the bill for this visit, but hey I won't have to pay for most of the bill.
No, Dave I have not gotten the hospital confused with the Hilton. I have been in both. I currently cannot justify going to the Hilton. Everyone would just think that I am slacking. Some may think that I am a slacker anyway (they're probably correct).
I am ready for a chocolate shake with chocolate chip cookie dough.
The marching band had its first competition today down in Payson. They did really well. Their theme is The Greatest Generation. There are 10 foot posters from the WW II era. I would invite anyone who would like to come. Talk with Lindsey, she would be happy to give you a schedule of her competitions.
Well, I am saying goodbye for now.

Hello Again

Hey All ya' All,
Obviously it has been a while. I will blame it on the start of school and we have trouble with the internet at home. Nathan did some voodoo for us and got it working.
Many of you know that I was in the hospital last week. During lunch break in a meeting last week I went to lunch. When I got back to my meeting I was not feeling very well. I had a hard time breathing. After some discussion with Jen I decided to go to the hospital. It was a lot of the samo-samo. They never find anything.
I was kept over night. During the night I had an episode. I ended up with 3-4 EKG's within an hour and 2 shots of morphine. Unfortunately, it didn't put me to sleep.
I was discharged and went across the street for a test. I have never had this one before; for a heart test anyway.
They use an MRI now and then inject you with a medicine that gets your heart to work. Then they have pictures of before and after.
The week since has been somewhat stressful. They usually are. Jen went to Long Beach for a conference. I don't do well playing Mr. Mom. I had better go for now.

Pics of the Moon

The moon was full or close to it the other night and thought it would be fun to take some pictures. I am going to attempt to download them to my blog. I have never been one to show my pics, but there is always a first time. Okay here it goes...
Do you see the Alien?

Another Alien.

I do not have a clue how I got this picture. I'm sorry to say that it was one of those lucky/weird shots people get.

I have one more week before school starts. I am not sure I am ready to go back, but time waits for teacher to get his fill of summer vacation. However, I am excited to see how what I've learned this summer applies to the classroom.

Just me Rambling

Here comes the rambling...
I find myself wanting to write something, but have nothing to write about. So, hence the rambling.
The teachers on my team asked me today what I needed. My answer was simple, "I need a cruise ship or beach, with an umbrella over my entire lounge chair, kicked back with a great book and a never ending supply of Coke (San Diego came to mind. I could hit a Padre's game as well).
It was here that I learned that one of Amy's, one of my fellow teachers, has a friend that goes around the block asking for donations. She never tells what the donations are for. When they are really donating to her own bank account.
Amy did say that she never donates, but says that her friend is hard to get off the door step. Maybe I should go around the neighborhood asking for donations. Does anyone think it will work?
Juli, I think you owe me $6.00. (Shhhh...Do you think she'll fall for it?)
Okay, I'm done now.

Monday, July 27, 2009

It is the latter part of July and it's begun already!!!

You ask what has begun...well the nightmares of course. What nightmares you ask? The ones about school is my reply. Last night I dreamed that my class was on the stage in our gym and I couldn't get them to do anything. One student kicked me. I took him to the office and told the principal that he was not welcome in my class. I couldn't find the books I needed, and no one was paying attention. I hope this one doesn't come true. If it does, I'm sunk for sure if it does.
This is a little early for me to have nightmares about school.
I can't believe how fast the summer has gone by. I am still trying to work on some projects around the house. However, I will keep plugging away and get done what I can.
That's all for tonight.

Relaxing for a Moment

It has been nice not to have anything scheduled. I haven't been exactly relaxing, though. However, I have been going at a slower pace. Our garden is still half weeds. We have tomato plants. Jen wanted a grape tomato plant. And BOING it has taken over the plants next to it. I love the smell of tomato plants when I move the vines to pull weeds. The backyard is still the best manicured yard of weeds in the city. The front yard is looking pretty good, too.
Can I take this moment to say that I want some Oreo cookies and milk? I could eat a whole bag. Maybe I'll go to Costco and get the 10 sleeved box. I'm feeling fat, but happy.
School starts 4 weeks from tomorrow.Am I even thinking about it? YUP...a little bit. Really, I have too many things planned between now and then. If I can get a fourth of them done I'll consider it a productive four weeks.
Jen and I are taking Lindsey driving on the freeway (at night) so she can get some driving time. It has only been the past couple of weeks that I wished she was driving. She could definitely run some errands for us.
Thanks for listening,

Summer Institute 2009

I have always loved to write. Today is are second to last day of the Summer Institute. I have enjoyed the writing we have done. I have learned that I do not have much of a vocabulary. I feel much like a true fifth grader among seniors and college students. So inadequate. Nevertheless, I have had a wonderful time being part of this class. I would have to say this has been the best class I have ever taken. I cannot believe how the time has flown by each day. At the end of our day it seems as if we had just started.
To the fellows of Summer Institute 2009 Thank you!!

Oh What a Summer!!!

This has been the best Summer I can remember. I'm having a hard time believing that in 5 more weeks school starts again. We have certainly been very busy. First of all we are in our last week of the Central Utah Writing Project. It has been a fantastic 3 weeks, and I am sorry that our time is almost over. I have learned so much about writing. I have enjoyed being able to have time to write. It is the only class that has actually allowed us time to do what we are learning.
One fellow is assigned to write a log. We each take a turn logging the day's events. Some have been very comical. Others have taken on some sort of theme.
Today Ann E. Cannon came a talked with us today. She has authored several books, and also writes a column in the Deseret News. She was very entertaining and educational to boot. This has been the best class I have ever taken. One other benefit is, where can I go to get 8 post graduate credits for only $40? It has been a bargain.
Last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday we went to Youth Conference. We went to Fish Lake. There were about 18 youth and 8 adult leaders. The kids were great.
On the way down we stopped at Cove Fort. I have never been there. It is a very interesting place. As we learned about the area, I could imagine what it might have looked and been like.
I have had a desire to make a quilt using old levi jeans with Braves pattern fabric on the back. This visit to the fort made that desire even stronger.
Thursday night Bishop Kitchen showed a DVD titled the Reflections of Christ. This is a documentary on a photographer taking pictures depicting Christ in several scenes from His life. They are so beautiful and moving. One pictures depicts Christ hugging John the Baptist after Christ had been baptized. The smile portrayed there was just beautiful. Most of the pictures I have seen of Christ never showed him smiling. Why wouldn't he be smiling after being baptized? It is a happy time and should be celebrated with hugs and smiles.
If you have not seen this DVD, I highly recommend you view it.
Friday night we hiked to the top part of the hill and had testimony meeting. I am so out of shape.
Other than the devotional and testimony meeting I liked Saturday morning the best. I ended up taking several pictures of everyone. I started by taking pictures of Ashley, Lindsey, Brynn, and Tacy. Brynn and Tacy were at our church meetings a week ago Sunday. These are two of the Burnham children and live in Colorado. They were visiting this week. Bishop Kitchen invited them to come with us to Youth Conference. Fortunately, they were able to come with us. It was funny to see most of the boys in the ward go all googly eyed for the both of them. We were glad to have them come with us.
I love you all and hope that things are going well for you.
Be happy and remember to smile!!!!
With much love,

Wasting Some Time

It is quite late, but I can't quite go to bed just yet. I have to give a lesson tomorrow morning in my writing class. Well, sticking true to form I have waited the last minute to do it. I will blame the kids or the weather or maybe my foot.
I have written most of it and I am taking a break so that I can go back to it in a minute and maybe have a "fresh" look at it. This will help in the editing process.
I have really enjoyed this class. It has taught me so much about writing and teaching writing. It has done what it was intended to do. My problem will be trying to remember everything that has been taught to teach to my students.
Today, I learned about parallels in writing. I have never even heard of them before. Janette used some examples of speeches given using this technique. Who knew?
Of a class of 18 students I am one of 3 teachers of elementary aged students. There is one math teacher and the rest are English teachers. They can be intimidating. I haven't felt that way yet, but during my lesson I think I just might feel way intimidated.
We have received about 8 books. All, but 2 are advanced reader's copies. Most of them are for young adult, high school, or even college readers. Nothing I can put on my shelves for students to read.
My writing group is very fun loving and comical. We make Jolene do all of the writing. After a lesson is given and a discussion by the class we meet in our writing groups to write a letter to the teacher that gave the demonstration stating what we liked or what could be changed. We write the letter using what the teacher taught us about. Doing Eric's (the math teacher) letter we wrote using a mathematician's point of view; it was a lot of fun.
I need to get back to my assignment.
Have a great day!!!!

"The Sand Lot"

Tonight was the closing ceremonies for the baseball season. They had a games, hot dogs, and presentations of each team among other things. The league had rented a sound system and showed "The Sand Lot" on a large screen. At JC Park the field is cut into the side of a hill. The screen was placed in the outfield behind third base facing the third base line. We were able to sit on the hillside and watch the movie. It was a lot of fun for me. Nathan, Maggey and Abbey stayed to watch the movie with me. Nathan really wanted to see this movie on the "big screen". It got a bit chilly and before the movie was over Nathan was rolled up in a sheet we were using as a blanket, and using one of my legs as a pillow. Maggey was wrapped in a blanket and laying on my chest. Abbey was content to sit on the ledge/cement wall. It was good time for me. I certainly hope it will be one they will remember.

Boys of Summer

We have just finished our last season game. The last two games the team played fantastic. They did very well considering that three of the the players played in positions where they have never played or practiced. We ended first in the our league (Don't tell that there were only 3 teams in our league. In our league/division our was 8 wins/2 losses. Over all we had a record of 11 wins/4 losses. They have great reason to be proud of themselves.

First 2 Official Days of Summer

I am finishing my second day of "my" summer. Yesterday I played in a golf tournament, had a nap and went to the movies with the Nathan, Maggey, and Abbey. Today, I went to another movie, napped, read, baseball meeting, and surfed the net. Don't anyone tell Jen. Yes, I have enjoyed being lazy.
Dane, Jeff, and Mike will openly admit that I do not golf well. They may even be kind enough to not say that in my presence...okay they would to be glad to tell you regardless if I'm around. However, yesterday was the my best game ever. I shot my first birdie. It was a lot of fun. Even more amazing is the fact that I did on a par 3. Par 3's are historically my worst holes to play. I even was able to put my name on the "closest to the hole card" for a period of time. It was fun to play well.
Bert is doing pretty well. He has a lot of leaves on him. He even stands out from the weeds around him. Ernie on the other hand has very few leaves, but seems to be among the living. I have as yet to plant anything more than tomatoes. I am going to work on that this week.
We have two more weeks of baseball and then a tournament. We may also be playing an all star tournament in the same week as the our championship tournament.
Anyone know of a part time job that I could get until Jan?
As always,

The Teacher's Point of View

As the end of the school year approaches teachers are asked if they are ready for school to be out. Serious question no doubt.
Here is my perspective and I do not claim to speak for my colleagues. Teaching school is being on the stage for a good portion of the school day. The time on stage depends on the a teacher's assignment. For example, a first grade teacher will spend more time in front of a classroom due the attention span of the a first grader is not very long. Colleen is a music specialist for the Ogden School District and is in front of children all day except traveling between schools. I think she even eats her lunch while driving (I wonder if the same rules apply for eating in the car as they do for talking or texting on the cell phone?). Sorry, small tangent.
When students are older such as fifth graders I can give them an assignment and expect them to work on it independently. Regardless of the grade level, teachers are on stage. We are expected to be entertaining and educating at the same time. Sometimes that can be extremely hard. We don't have the graphics that those computer games have.
Getting back to the original question about school getting out. I do like summers, like the idea of sleeping in and a change in the environment/venue. Please note that for many it is not 3 months off. Many teachers take summer classes to enhance their educational arsenal. I will be in class 4 days a week for 4 weeks in the middle of the summer. Much of the time will be reading and writing. The work will be equivalent to 6 semester hours of post graduate work.
I have really enjoyed this class and I don't want to see them leave. So, this year I am sad for the school year to end. The have been rockin' awesome. We did the "Road to Success" sponsored in part by Ken Garff. The goal for the school was to read 1,000,000 minutes. This class set the goal to read 275,000 minutes. They reached that goal last week. Tomorrow I will take a final count to see how many minutes they read. Most of the time this class knows when it's time to settle down and get to work. Though I never moved to a new school and was the new kid on the block I do know that being the new kid can be hard. I had my original students all year long, with the exception of one.
One thing some parents do not realize is the importance of the first day of school. The tone of the classroom is set on the first day and can be difficult for a student the misses the first day. They can sometimes feel like an outcast; even if they are not new to the school.

A Surprise

Jen and I jokingly talk about a 25 year plan for upgrades/changes to our home. When something is mentioned about adding something to the house we respond with, "It's in the 25 year plan." We have asked Mike to put in whatever is needed for the secondary water system. He said, "Bart, I could put in a sprinkling system in your front yard and the north side of your house. It wouldn't be too much more than what it cost to put the stuff for the secondary water." Anyway he twisted my arm hard enough. So, we start trenching tonight and will continue on Sat. Two sections of the yard will have a sprinkling system. I am pretty excited. Jen is even more excited, she's in charge of watering to those two sections. I still get to water the back lawn. Actually, it is more weeds, but it will be the best manicured lot of weeds around.
It will be fun. After we get the backyard set the way we want it we can lay it with a sprinkling system.
I am waiting for my ship to come in so I can have the yard done in the next 2 years. One of the things I am looking forward to changing is patio. Who ever put it in the first place didn't do very well. If you don't pick up your feet the cement will trip up.
Thanks Mike.

Coke and Cookies

Sundays after church Jen and I would take the kids to Grandpa B's house for Coke and cookies after church. Grandpa's Coke had a certain taste to it. Though it came out of a 2 liter bottle, it always tasted better than when I would buy a 2 liter bottle. A few years ago, I discovered that Juli discovered Grandpa's secret. Her Coke tastes just like Grandpa B's. The thing that confusles me is that I am not sure she really knows the secret. I was at her house to get the tiller. It has been a long time since I have helped myself to her fridge. I did so on this visit. True to form her off brand cola tasted just like it should.
It certainly brings fond memories. Maggey was talking about it the other day. I really couldn't believe she remembers much. Ah, the simple things that spark fond memories of time gone by.

We planted some tomato plants. Come August we will have some tomatoes. I am looking forward to BLT's.
Also, FYI. I have named my two peach trees. The one near the front of the garden has been given the name of Bert and the one at the back has been named Ernie. If you happen to come by please talk with them and give them some encouragement.
I am going to attempt to go to sleep.
Love always,

OLD Man
P.S. Confusle is a word ask Lindsey. I am just not sure of the spelling.

Peach Trees

Because I'm no longer on the computer every night I don't find myself blogging much.
After 7 years of threatening to plant some peach trees I finally bought some and planted them on Sat. I bought them for me for mother's day. Don't worry I had Jen covered on that account as well. I will need to wait 3 more years to get some fresh peaches and some peach jam. Maybe I will learn how to make homemade bread to go with the peach jam.
Got to go

Tax Season and another Favor

The end of the tax season is upon me. Yes, I know that 15 April was a couple of weeks ago, however, tomorrow night 28 April is my last night to work. The extra money has been great. I really like having the extra cash flow. It made dating a little easier and all of the other things that come up throughout the month. Not to mention getting a little further out of debt. I wish it were as easy to get out of debt as it is to get in it. I will claim the stupidity that got into debt in the first place. Enough on the bad stuff.
I need a favor. I am putting together a book of story problems that I can use with my students. I need contexts for each of the operations. I can supply the numbers, but I have run out of ideas. I have about 100 or so, but need about 40 more. Some stories can have multiple operations.
Unlike my colleagues I am done with end of year testing. Does that mean I am all done teaching for the year?
I started my students on 2 mock trials. One trial is based on Hansel and Gretel. The other concerns the 3 Billy Goats Gruff. I let my students choose which trial they wanted. To my surprise they chose The State of Utah vs. Ms. Sand Witch. I am looking forward to seeing them. If you are interested, shows will be held between 18-22 May. Details will come later.
The Dodgers play their second game on Wed. I am so excited/nervous. It depends on the day. Currently, we are 1-0. I now that doesn't mean much, but hey it's a good start.
I love you all,

The Confession of an OLD Man

I must confess that though I prefer things on the cooler side of things, I have enjoyed the Sun the last couple of days. I will do the rest of my confessing to the Bishop. If I could stay this temp for the rest of the summer I would be very grateful. However, I know it will get a lot hotter.
We played baseball last night. It was pretty good game. The team did very well for not practicing for about 10 days. I did get a little nervous at the bottom of the 2nd inning. The other team had tied the game. We were able to get some steals to home in the last inning. The team we played is in the division just below ours. A lot of the kids are very young in the game and age. It gets hard to help extend my own players when we play the young guys.
Starting next week we play 2 games a week, and one practice mixed in.
I love being part of the boys of summer!!!!

Juli Larsen

As many of you know that today is Juli's birthday. She happens to be in the one of the places she loves most, if not the her most favorite place...Disneyland. I have thought about her a little more often the last few days than I normally do; and dedicate this post to her.
One of the biggest jokes that I have with Juli is that I took about 2 years to convince her that she owed me $6. When I would bring it up she would rack her brain trying to remember why she owed me money at all. On one grateful day she wrote me out a check for $6. I started laughing and gave her check back and said those wonderful words that pranksters use quite often, "Just Kidding!" She rolled her eyes and, I hope I remember correctly, her chuckling with me.
I remember one Sunday afternoon when she was dating Dave. She was sitting at the table and said, "I wish Dave would call." I asked what his number was. I called him and told him that Juli wanted him to call her. Then I hung up. He called a minute or two later. I never learned if Dave thought Juli asked me to do that or if he knew I did on my own.
My mind goes back to pictures in the photo albums of when we were kids. For along time she was the only girl among 4 boys. I hope that I didn't treat her too poorly.
I remember her driving the Ranchero. How she would work at the school district warehouse. I have fond dreams of going miniature golfing with Juli, Cindy Jones, a neighbor down the street, and Kelly Savage, my friend next door. It seems we went every other week for most of the summer. Juli would drive. We sometimes would go to Leatherby's (I think) for ice cream. Such great memories.
I am thankful that she lives close by. She is patient with me and loves me.
I love to hear her talk about taking pictures. It is fun to see the fruits of her labor. I love to hear about her trips she takes with Dave and even the ones she takes on her own; especially to do the scrapbooking thing.
I am not sure if Juli would admit it, but she would give you the clothes off her back.
The other day I was tickling Nathan. I can get on top of Nathan, hold his arms above his head, and get pretty close to tickle him, but not touching him, he starts laughing. Juli is worse than that. I could pin her to the floor put her arms above her head and do nothing more and she would start laughing.
Unfortunately for Juli, she and I shared a bed when I was little. The way it really worked...I was such a wild sleeper that she often found herself on the floor. There wasn't much sharing involved. I sometimes wonder if she just started on the floor so as to get a good night's sleep. Maybe that's why when she got up she would take a blanket, curl up in a ball and lie on the heat vent in the dining room. I had never put those two things together. Sorry Juli.
I can't say that I remember watching Juli dance, but I remember her enjoying it. I remember her telling about her last visit with Sandy before he died. She talked about standing at the front window and watching him drive away.
Juli is very brave. Let me explain. Juli lived in Clinton. Jen and I was living in Logan. Dave was working in Carbon County or near there. She asked me to fly her down there. I had just gotten my private pilot's license and needed the hours. It was a good flight. One of the smoothest flights I have ever been on. The brave part was the fact that she trusted me to fly her down and back. On the way home we were over Spanish Fork Canyon. I asked if she wanted to take the controls. She replied, "No." I showed her how the control wheel and pedals worked. I then put my feet flat on the floor, and I sat on my hands. I said, "If you don't take control of the airplane we are going to crash into that mountain peak over there." She took control of the airplane and did very well.
Juli, I could continue with many more memories, but I had better get to bed. Let me finish with this; I love you dearly. You have a good heart (though your physical one may some work, you know what I mean). I love the quiet ways you do things and really expect nothing in return. Though it has been a while, I like leaving "cold hard cash" in your fridge. I love your creativeness. You work hard. You are a great example of how to run a home. I need some of your self discipline, do you have any to spare?
I love you. May Heavenly Father's richest blessings continue to be yours. May you have all that you need and continue to give as you have. We are all greatly blessed to know and have you with us. And may Grammy's cookie jar always be full.
With much love and affection,

OLD Man

Ah Dang...it's over!!!!

Though I love my job, I must take this opportunity to say that I am not ready to go back. I have enjoyed the staying up late, working for TaxHawk, and watching movies.
However, I do understand that this would get really boring if I were to do it all of the time. Work keeps me going. To quote a line from Return to Me: I'm blessed with work.
Both Nathan and I are nervous for tomorrow's game. It will be interesting to see how the team reacts working together. Which reminds me, I have to work out the rotation for riding the pine and batting order. I hope these guys don't freeze up and choke when batting.
As always, love you all.

I am officially excited

I distributed uniforms today. Our first game is on Monday. With a week off I was hoping that we could one practice before we officially started the season. It will be interesting to see how they play after 10 days off. I am so excited to start the season. I was able to meet some more of our parents it was fun, too.
I am also excited to BBQ something. Though I'd like that something to be a t-bone steak. That will have to wait for another day.

Spring Break 2009

Here we go.
If you read past posts you know that I got rid of the couches. Well, Spring Break in our house consisted of three mattresses on the floor in our living room. Nathan, Maggey, and Abbey have been sleeping in the front room. They/we have watched several movies, many of them more than once. With it snowing what else can we do. Maggey, Abbey, Jen and I went to see Monsters Vs. Aliens 3D on Monday. Because I am thinking I owe myself something for working how many ever hours I took us to Arby's for supper. I am almost ready for another sandwich.
Tomorrow we are heading to Grandma Mary's to play games. I told Jen to not wake me up, I'll get up when I'm ready to. I may get up read and go back to sleep.
As you have noticed Lindsey and Ashley are not mentioned here. They are in St. George with ALee. I hope basking in the sun.
This may not sound like a lot to many of you, but we have had a lot of fun. I forgot to mention that we projected the movies up on the wall. We also projected American Idol on the wall to. Ask Jen about American Idol comercials. Actually, you better ask the kids about it. Jen may see it as what happens on spring break stays with spring break.

As for the rest of spring break I will still be working on taxes and maybe doing things around the house.
The grass around the house has never been greener. I am trying to be better about maintaining it. I am trying to get it fuller. Due to my stupidity it has been really bad. I am paying for my mistakes, but still learning.
Thanks for reading,

Boys of Summer 2

We had our last practice today before spring break. If these guys can move forward from here I believe they will be a team to reason with. If we keep them throwing hard and staying in front of the ball and then swinging the bat they will do very well.
They worked very hard today. I was glad to see that we had enough to field a team. Our season starts in 2 weeks.
Go Dodgers!!!!!

What a Day!!!!

As with many of you, I really enjoyed the warm weather. It was good to be outside playing baseball with the team. Heaven forbid I even sweat some. It was nice to not have to worry about the cold and snow to practice. Don't get me wrong, I love the snow, but the warm was nice.
Spring break starts next week. I will be working for TaxHawk for most of Mon, Tue, and Wed. After that who knows. I would like to take the trailer to the canyon and sit by the fire and read. Currently, I do not have a book that I am engrossed in.
I would like to buy a LaFuma chair. They are so comfortable; just the thing for a good comfortable reading chair for a camp out.
I believe Little Mill Campground is opening up this summer. We are excited to have a camp spot so close. We can go up camping and then come down to town for any of those things we do as a family. We could even go to a movie and then head back up the canyon. I hope we take advantage of camping this summer.
Love you all,

April????

I am having a hard time believing that it is April already. By this time next week I will be on spring break. My biggest plans for spring break?...Working for TaxHawk. Maybe I hope to work long enough to pay for the better part of a couch. Yes we are still without a couch. Our front room has so much room without it. We have room to move around. The kids are on the other hand say they are ready to have one.
To be honest I can't believe that I did what I did. Even more surprising is that Jen went along with it.
For those of you don't know the story, it goes something like this: Our couches were falling apart; and breaking down. Then the kids love to shove junk under and in them. I was tired of it all. So, I took them to the dump. We have been without a couch for a month.
A few weeks ago we went shopping and decided what we wanted and now we are saving up for what we want. I'll let you know when we get one or set. I may venture out and put the picture on my blog.
The Braves play their opening game tomorrow. GO BRAVES!!!!!!!!
I had better get back to winning Abbey at 5 Crowns.
Most sincerely,

This OLD Man

Simply Me

Saturday, March 21, 2009

Please bare with me during this blog it may be hard to follow. First of all I am amazed at the workings and intricacies of life. How it all is intertwined. How are lives are linked for the fact the we can give and receive what is needed by those with whom we associate.
I have been contemplating how I would answer the following question: Am I a religious person? I really do not think that I am not, but on the other hand I suppose that I am. My definition of a "religious person" seems to include someone that is fanatic about religion whatever that religion may be. I don't see myself as that person. I do attend church and pray. I have probably read my scriptures more in the last 2 years than I have in the several previous years. Though I was not able to attend the Nicholes Family Temple Night a few a weeks ago I am thankful that this tradition has started.
My own children get to hear my testimony enough, but very rarely does the rest of the family get to. Maybe I should share it here.
I will admit that I feel a bit embarrassed, but you can't see my red face.
On my mission I learned and gained what I felt to be a strong testimony of the life after we leave this one. It seemed to be one of the principles of the gospel that came easier to me than some of the others. To tell someone that we do continue to live after we die is something that I know to be true. As I hear stories of people who do not have this knowledge I become saddened. Especially when they have lost a child.
I remember the day I came to gained the testimony of Christ. I was in my apartment in a small town in northern Georgia. I was seated on the couch waiting for another set of missionaries to come and it came to me. It is one of those things that I remember just as if it had happened moments ago.
I have also come to learn the importance of friends. In the church it is stressed that it is important to have good friends in those teenage years. Through what I have seen it is as important to have good friends regardless of age. I am so thankful for the friends that I have. They are tops in my book.
Finally, (maybe) I am grateful for our family. Not only my own, Jen and kids, but all of my extended family. I look at my siblings, that would include their spouses, and am in total awe. Some them move very quietly through life doing good things like they have a secret. I love the humor they have and share. I love to call and talk with them on the phone. My siblings are good to me. I have been very blessed to be part of their family. When one of the grandkids have gone through the temple for the first time I like to sit at the other end of the room and watch the hugs and smiles that occur. You are truly a beautiful family.
I had better go to bed. I've got meetings at what I consider early in the morning. I love you all. Be happy!!!!!!

Boys of Summer

Well, I am coaching Nathan's baseball team again. I don't know if Nathan really likes the idea or not, but I think it's a lot of fun. Nathan tried out on Tue. for the major leagues, but did not make it. The league president called me last night and asked if I would coach one of the minor league teams. If there were a bad side to this is that there are only 3 minor league teams. Makes it kind of hard to really compete with many teams. Regardless, I am planning on having some fun. I know that I have 2 other kids from my team from last year coming to play with me again. I have not received my full roster yet. I'm hoping to only have 11 players on it. It's kind of hard to give everyone a good amount of playing time with anymore than that.
I look forward to having a good season. Our season starts the last week of April, and we go to mid/late June.
A little humor for Nate and I...we are the dodgers again. Will we ever get to be the Braves?
I am looking forward to a good season.
Rock on all and have a most excellent day!!!
Love,

Me

I really hate waiting!!!!

Not that I have had reason to go to the ER lately, when I do go I hate having to wait. For example, one night I was suffering from an allergic reaction to something. Dang it I had to wait. Not that any of you will care, let alone know what I am talking about. The Central Utah Writing Project is local chapter of the National Writing Project. This chapter is very much in its infancy. This summer is the first summer they will be having a Summer Institute. To be invited to participate in Summer Institute one needs to apply. First your application is reviewed. If the powers that be like it then you are invited to interview. Using whatever criteria, if they like the interview then the applicant is invited to attend Summer Institute. I am so tired of waiting. I want them to tell me that I am either in or out. My interview is not until a week from Thursday, as in n 19 March. I am thankful that the interview is a group interview. I will be with 3-4 other people in the interview.
I don't know.
School is going really well. We have started doing state reports. My state is Kentucky. I really want to go there someday. I hope Jen will go with me there on vacation. I want to go tour the Corvette plant and the Louisville Slugger plant. Hey, maybe I could during the Kentucky Derby. It all sounds fun. That will have to be a dream for a later date.
I don't mind waiting for retirement though. I am definitely okay waiting for that. Maybe I have said enough for today.
Once again Love you all.

Too Much Facebook

I have been spending a stupid amount of time on Facebook. I have caught up on a lot of people from high school. I have decided that it is all too busy for me. I must be getting old. Also, I have tried to spend more time in my journal. Sometimes I think this is like a journal, but I do not know if I can print any of these pages to put in a journal.
I failed at going back to the gym the last three plus weeks. I am just lazy. I think I am blaming my working for TaxHawk. I feel a little worn out. Jen mentioned on the family blog that we just celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary. We were so excited that we went and bought 2 new tires for the van. Can I have a wave?
For those of you who care I am buying a canoe this week. It will be available by the end of the week. If you would like to use let me know.
Lindsey is driving a bit more. I get to sit in the back seat. I am not sure that I like that idea. It's kind of fun to see her drive. The other day she missed a turn and we sat for a while while she was trying to figure out what to do. We finally got moving.
Nathan is getting anxious to play some baseball. I am not sure if I will be coaching this year. It gets a little wild. Sometimes my heart just gets pumping and I sometimes get too excited. I remember having to walk down the outfield line to control myself.
I mostly hope the kids have a good time playing. I was surprised that we finished second in our division last year. During the tournament I just didn't know how to bring it all together. Live and learn I hope. I am not sure that I can beat Clay. He's good, and brings out the best in his kids.
School is going okay. I have finally got my sound system working...most of it anyway. It is taking a long time to get my hand held microphone problem fixed.
I had a good visit down in St. George. Juli, Ashley, and I made a day trip of it. We left at 5 AM and got home at 6 PM so I could work.
Love you all

I will admit that I have not exercised but twice in 2 weeks. Between working every night and not feeling very well I have been tired. I am feeling the effects of not exercising. I have drank a little more water than I normally do, but not much.
On another subject...I am threatening to throw out the couches in living room. My children ask me if I am going to replace them. The answer is...NO. They ask what are we going to sit on. They don't like the idea of sitting on the floor. Ashley especially believes that I will not sit on the floor. Actually, I would like to throw a bunch of things out. I will have to restrain myself. It was interesting when throwing out the old entertainment center. I got it out the front door and pushed on it and it collapsed in nice neat pile. Definitely made it easier to put in the truck.
Jen bought a Dyson vacuum on Monday. She loves it. She has used every day and multiple times a day. I hope that it lasts longer than the cheapo's we've bought the last few years. Thanks James for the info.
What else can I ramble about?
Nothing currently nothing comes to mind, but have a great day!!!!!

Here is what my exercise plan looks like.

My plan looks like this. First of all I thought it would be fair to myself to give myself 300 points for the first 10 weeks of exercise. I have decided to give myself 5 points for every time I work out. As mentioned earlier I do not like to pack a lunch. I figure I would award myself 5 points for every time I eat an appropriate lunch. I will also award myself 1 point for every pound I lose. No, I will not pay myself for pounds that I lose more than once. I am not much of a water drinker. I will give myself 1 point for every cup of water that I drink. My goal is 1,000 points. I have not stated my prize yet, but I am thinking about it. I would like to get a Wii, but that has yet to be determined.
Thanks again Tyler and Ashley.

Okay Tyler, Here's the Plan

Because I am one of the poor government workers...okay Tyler I am just kidding. I can't afford to pay myself, but at Tyler's suggestion, I can award myself points. I figure 1,000 points is a good goal. I can award myself 5 points for every time I go to the fitness center to work out. I am not much of a water drinker. For every time I drink at least I drink cup of water or so I will give myself 1 point. I really can't give myself points for losing weight. I would give myself points for losing the same couple of pounds. If that sounds confusing it's like this: Tue morning I can weigh 284. On Fri morning I can weigh 281. On Tue I can weigh 283; Fri I am down to 280; Tue I am at 284 again. You get the idea.
Also, I am not a fan of packing a lunch. If I eat a healthy lunch I would award myself 5 points. Exercising and eating a healthy lunch I can earn as much as 65 points in a week's time.
As I have given this some thought, the problem I am coming up with is what is worth a 1,000 points. I am thinking that a Wii would be great, but I'm not sure I can follow through with that. Maybe I'll go get me a prime rib, cook it and eat it all by myself. I think about that one some more.
Thanks again Tyler and Thanks to Ashley for getting me started.

Thoughts of Today

First, Tyler's plan for exercise is very inspiring. Thanks Tyler. My only problem is that I cannot currently pay myself. I am working to change that. Keep going Tyler. If you start burning off your own weight and need some more to burn I'll be happy to send you some of mine and you can burn it off; I am not doing so well.
The last month or so my class has been reading and writing different types of poetry. I have taken some of these poems, typed and bound them for our classroom library. It has been a lot of fun to read. The last set the class wrote is called Name Poem. I assigned the class to use the word WORLD. Each line has to start with the letter of the word. In this case W starts the first sentence, O starts the second, and so on. They read one of these poems in class. I then assigned them to write two with words of their choosing. I have had a lot of fun reading them as I have typed them. I am tempted to make a copy of the book for all of them. The third set of poems is a bio poem. One about themselves. I have not collected them yet.
I had one more thing to write about and can't remember, Oh well.

Something Fun

I got to do something fun today!
Next week is Dad's birthday. I am not one to be creative about gifts and things. A while ago Dad was talking about going to the movies. At the Cinemark here in town Seniors (that's not seniors in high school) gets in for a discount on Modays. He suggested a couple of movies he wanted to see. Last week I thought it would be fun to take him to the movies. So, I took he and Mom to the see Mall Cop today. I told them if they didn't laugh that I must have a somewhat warped sense of humor.
When I go to a movie I always have to have a bag of popcorn and a coke (I can blame Jen for that). I bought a bag to share with all of us. When we sat down. Dad was in the middle and Mom and I on either side. After I got sat down, Mom and Dad were talking about something and Mom came and sat by me. I had the popcorn on my lap, so I got sit in the middle.
It was really fun and nice to know that I can be creative sometimes.
Love,

Me

Not that I have anything to really say, I might use this for its purpose...to ramble. I feel so tired I don't even know what to ramble about. School has been going pretty well. We have been studying a lot of fractions. We have also been writing different types of poems. Today my students recited their word poems. I assigned them to write a poem using the word "World". I am going to type them, bind them and put out for students to read. I am pretty excited to do it. We did the same thing with another set of poems. It was really fun to read. I hope the students enjoy reading them as much as I did.
I am still waiting for the electrician to install my audio equipment. It will make the poems my class recites so much more fun to hear. The class will not have to hear me yell, "Louder".
I do have some wonderful colleagues. I was feeling light headed the other day. A couple of weeks earlier my blood pressure was lower than normal. I thought maybe it was still low. I also couldn't think straight.
The secretary was asking me if I needed to go home. I don't know if it is good or bad, but our custodian is a former paramedic.
Time is flying by. I can't believe that next week is the end of January. I was talking with my students and told them that May will be here before they know it.
I think I'm done for now.

Sorry...One Other Thing to Mention

Well, Tyler can brag about having floor seats at a Jazz game. Though I cannot brag about attending a Jazz game. I can brag about having fourth row seats to the BYU/TCU game. We sat fourth row at mid court. I did get dinner with my seat and half time snacks. The one thing that I have over Tyler's experience is that my tickets were FREE. I would love one day to have a the opportunity to have the same experience that Tyler had. He has given me some inspiration to pursue it.
Again, Love you all

Taxes

It is that time of the year again. I am officially starting working for the tax season this year.

Advertisement: If you go to www.express1040.com you can file your federal tax return for free and file your state tax return for $9.95. We do many forms necessary to file your taxes. If you choose to receive your refund by direct deposit you can receive your refund in as little as 8 days. If you have questions let me know.

Okay that my advertisement for the day or month or something.
I was able to talk with a district electrician. He hopes to install my audio enhancement system within the next 3 weeks. I am really excited, and am looking forward to using it. One of the 6th grade teachers told that once I get use to it I will never want to go without one.
I had better get back to work.

Knowledge, Wisdom & Mr. Rogers

After shoveling snow this morning for my workout I was lying on the couch resting. For some reason I was contiplating the difference between knowledge and wisdom. I either decided or had heard that knowledge is what you know and wisdom is what you do with the knowledge you have.
Now why Mr. Rogers? It is not a secret that I like things on the colder side of life. My classroom has been a little too cold. I happen to have a jacket on the back of my chair. I wore it yesterday and again today. While I was talking to my students I looked down and seeing the jacket on me, I instantly felt like Mr. Rogers. The zipper doesn't work so I didn't zip it up, nor did I sing a song. I really liked him and was saddened when he died. I believe he did a lot of good for the world. It did give me a chuckle for the day.

The End

The End...of what you might ask? I only refer to the end of my mostly wonderful Christmas holiday. I have slept in, opened presents, eaten, seen a few movies, started working for Taxhawk, and the list could continue a little further. I am not looking forward to getting up at 515 to go to the fitness center again. Mid morning was wonderful. Nathan and I went tonight and it was relatively empty, unlike it is on a weekday mornings. In the beginning I had lost at most 1.3 pounds. I weighed today and was up 2.7 pounds from the time I started. I am hoping it was muscle weight. I have been at this activity for over a month now. If I have to miss doing a workout and I know it, I try to bypass the walking and lift weights instead. I can't say if I have built any muscle, but I hope so. I should have been concerned about my weight about 14 years ago. I am a "little" slow. I am not so much exercising to loose weight. I am doing it just get into better shape, but I do need to track the weight. I weigh in twice a week. Tuesday and Friday mornings.
I am a excited to get school into full swing again. I do not have a clue as to what I will do the first week we are back. I'll worry about that on Monday. I am excited to get my class started on the annual chess tournament. The student that won the tournament last year also won it in when he was my student in third grade. It is an activity I do in the cold months of the year. I hope it helps break up the monotany of winter.
Living close to the school where I teach it is always fun to see who is at the school when I drive by at different times when school is out. There are a few of the faculty that are at the school constantly. Unlike me who show up on rare occasions.
Happy New Year to all!!!!!
